Today was one of those days where things didn’t quite work out the way I planned.

I wanted to make something for Miss 3 (it’s her turn, they keep track!) and it needed to be relatively fuss free. I have seen some adorable jetpacks on pinterest and knew my kids would love them, so I’ve been mentally toying with my own version for awhile.

First step, prepare the empty plastic bottles. I thought rather than silver cardboard or paint I would go for a sparkly version. The plan was to mix PVA glue with a little water, just enough to make it ‘flow’, and coat the inside of the bottle with it. First attempt, too runny and it wouldn’t stick to the sides. Second attempt, better but still too much water, third time worked a charm.

Next step, add a crapload of silver glitter. Yes, crapload is the official unit of measure for glitter. Shake it all about until the bottle is well coated and wait for it to dry. And wait. And wait. And wait.

In the meantime I whipped up a little harness type thing to hold the bottles and strap onto Miss 3′s back. I had planned to take a few photos and make this a tutorial of some sort. What actually happened was I got distracted sewing and forgot to take the photos. I have a photo of the materials I started with, and a photo of the finished product, and nothing in between.

My bottles were finally dry, and again, something not to plan, the coating of glitter is not the thick, silver veneer I had envisioned … its more of a light twinkle on a clear bottle.

Nevermind, I can work with that for now, and re-make the bottles another way, another day. And because I’m planning on replacing them, I haven’t hot-glued the flames on as I planned, instead I’ve attached them with rubber bands so I can swap them over.

And here it is, my collection of two photos to demonstrate the process of nothing going to plan. You’ll have to fill in the blanks for yourself. The important thing is I’ll have a delighted 3 year old flying around the house when she sees it in the morning.

From this …..

(insert your own mental images here)

… to this.

Something else also not to plan, was posting this after midnight and missing my daily post for Blogtoberfest. I’m taking it as a mere technicality, I haven’t been to bed yet from the 5th so this doesn’t count as the 6th, it’s only one hour into the day.
